American General was incorporated as a general business corporation in Texas in 1980 and is the successor to American General Insurance Company, an insurance company incorporated in Texas in 1926.

The Company reports the results of its operations in three business divisions: retirement services, life insurance, and consumer finance.


RETIREMENT SERVICES.

The retirement services division markets retirement products and services through two major distribution systems. The Company’s financial advisors sell tax-qualified annuities and mutual funds to employees of educational, health care, and government entities, and other not-for-profit organizations. The Company also markets non-qualified annuities through financial institution representatives at banks and other financial institutions.


LIFE INSURANCE.

The life insurance division provides traditional, interest-sensitive, and variable life insurance and annuities through multiple distribution channels. The division's primary focus is the sale of life insurance and annuity products to individuals. The Company reaches its customers through independent and career agents, as well as banks, broker dealers, and financial planners.


CONSUMER FINANCE.

The consumer finance division provides a wide variety of consumer finance products, including mortgages, consumer loans, retail sales financing, and credit-related insurance. The Company markets these products through a nationwide network of branch offices.
